The Boat is a collection of four photographs shot in Istanbul, Turkey, which depict a Syrian woman struggling to put on a lifejacket.
This woman is one of many Syrian refugees who have attempted to cross the Aegean Sea to seek refuge in Europe. This crossing is often done in rickety and dangerously overcrowded vessels. The woman shown in The Boat “is tangled – physically and emotionally – and shaking.
